February 27, 1953 - December 31, 2010
Thank you so much to Rudy's friends for their spoken words in this film. In order of appearance,
Michael "Rudy" Guess, 57, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2010 at his Studio City home. The cause of his death was Renal Cell Carcinoma.
Rudy was born in Miami, FL to parents Ivan "Ike" and Shirley Guess, and grew up in both Florida and Scottsdale, AZ. As a young boy, he picked up a guitar, which became his first love and his livelihood. He studied multiple instruments in elementary school and high school, participated in the Saguaro High School marching band and began to play in rock bands with his friends. Rudy studied music and songwriting in college, and then devoted his time to being a full-time musician, traveling around the US, playing in various bands, and eventually settling in Los Angeles. He wrote and recorded his own songs, later becoming engineer, and producer in his own studio, recording demos and albums for himself and other artists. For many years, Rudy's work included musical director and co-producer on a number of Carole King albums. He then became a core member of her live band and toured extensively with her. In recent years, Rudy wrote music for commercials, film and television - in fact, too many to name them all. As an artist, he wrote and produced songs for his own CDs: "Rudy and the Surf Kings", "El Surfeador", "Rudy and the Surf Kings Do Christmas", and with The Rudy Guess Orchestra recorded "Still Lucky", a Big Band orchestra recording.
Rudy was married to his beloved Lorna, his life partner and love of his life, for 28 years. They enjoyed a life filled with music, friends, travel, and their cherished pets. They lovingly built their home over the years, making it a reflection of their interests and tastes. It was a warm place where family and friends were always welcome, especially at the Rudy Bar.
Rudy had a profound influence on many people he met and worked with and will be remembered by his warm smile and special ease. He carried himself with a subtle and strong confidence and would be equally comfortable in the company of a small child or the president of the United States. Rudy's kind soul will forever be held dear in the hearts of all who loved him.
